Preventive Services

Women’s preventive care is an important routine checkup for your overall and reproductive health. A well-woman exam consists of screenings of the vagina, cervix, uterus and breasts. This assessment helps your healthcare provider detect any potential health conditions and provides an opportunity for patients to address any questions or concerns they might have.

Our women’s health specialists provide comprehensive and compassionate preventive care screenings for women in all stages of life. Call (205) 664-9995 or contact us online to schedule a well-woman exam appointment at one of our women’s preventive health services centers, conveniently located in Birmingham and Alabaster, Alabama.

FAQS: Women’s Preventive Services

“Who should get a well-woman exam?”

A well-woman exam is recommended for all females from the time you experience your first menstrual period. Our goal is to sensitively and respectfully address your health and help you feel comfortable bringing any questions or concerns you may have to your women’s health specialist.

“How often should I get a well-woman exam?”

A women’s health preventive screening should be performed once a year. If you have any symptoms or concerns you wish to discuss with our team of women’s health specialists, you can also make an appointment before your annual exam.

“What happens during a well-woman exam?”

During a women’s health exam, your doctor will perform physical screenings to check for any potential medical conditions or abnormalities. Your doctor will also ask about:

    • Your personal and family medical history
    • Overall health, wellness and exercise habits
    • The frequency of your menstrual period, including any pain or discomfort
    • Whether or not you are sexually active
    • Use of contraceptives and STD prevention

Your women’s health specialist will also be happy to discuss any questions or concerns you have about fertility and family planning.

“What types of health screenings will the doctor perform?”

Women’s preventive care screenings can include these exams:

Breast exams are an assessment of breast tissue, which are performed to detect any lumps, cysts or other potential abnormalities. Regular breast exams play an important role in the detection and treatment of breast cancer.

A pelvic exam is performed to assess the internal and external vaginal area. This exam helps your care provider check the size of your uterus and ovaries and detect any areas of swelling or discomfort.

A Pap smear is a routine procedure to check for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV). The vaginal canal is swabbed so a sample can be sent for a lab exam, to determine if any precancerous cells are present.
